The Location

Situated in the heart of the Lowther Hills, Wanlockhead is the highest village in Scotland. The picturesque area is an excellent centre for outdoor pursuits and Winter sports, and is home to South of Scotland's only ski centre.

Situated in an ideal and enviable environment for anyone with a love of the great outdoors

Wanlockhead lies only 7 miles from the M74 Glasgow – Carlisle motorway. Both Glasgow and Edinburgh can be reached within one hour by car, with most people commuting on a daily basis to these cities.

Together with the neighbouring village of Leadhills, the local area has a vibrant community life and amenities which include a general shop, hotel, two pubs,
mobile bank, mobile library, regular bus services, and a primary school (with nurseries in Abington and Sanquhar, and secondary schools in Biggar and Sanquhar).

The village has a great community feel with playgroup activities for babies and toddlers, seasonal craft markets, flower show, gala day, bingo and ceilidh nights, and various community groups (book club, knitting, yoga, aikido...)

Local attractions include The Leadhills-Wanlockhead Railway, the highest natural adhesion railway in Scotland; Leadhills Golf Course, Scotland's highest golf course at 1500ft (450m) above sea level; the Lowther Hills Ski Centre, South of Scotland's only snowsports centre; The Southern Upland Way, Scotland's only coast to coast footpath; The Grouse Moors, which cover in excess of 11,000 acres (45 km2) and are considered to be amongst the finest in Scotland; The Miner's Library, which is the oldest subscription library in Scotland; and the Lead Mining Museum, a genuine lead mine to visit along with a large display of local minerals, shop, tearoom and goldpanning facilities. Leadhills and Wanlockhead are known as 'Gods Treasure House in Scotland'. King James VI crown regalia was made with gold from the area and over 70 different minerals can still be found in the hills. The British and Scottish Gold Panning Championships are held annually in Wanlockhead.

Wanlockhead is ideally placed for exploring the South of Scotland. The Central Belt, the Scottish Borders, and the Galloway coast are little more than an hour's drive away.
